How Many Cups of Coffee Do You Get From a Bag?

Posted by Ben Cram on

Have you ever wondered how many cups of coffee you're going to get from your bag?  Let's do the math so you can schedule your coffee subscription deliveries like a pro.

This is hands down one of the most common questions we get from people trying to plan their coffee subscriptions. It makes sense—whether you're brewing a comforting morning cup or dialing in an espresso shot, knowing how far a bag of beans will stretch is key to keeping your coffee corner stocked. Let’s break it down based on brewing style and bag sizes.

Filter Coffee: The 17:1 Ratio

For any filter coffee—think pour-over, drip, or French press—we recommend starting with a 17:1 water-to-coffee ratio. That means for every gram of coffee, you’ll use 17 grams (or milliliters) of water. For simplicity, let’s stick to an 8-ounce (240-milliliter) serving size.

Here’s how it shakes out:

    •    An 8-ounce cup uses 14 grams of coffee (240 ÷ 17 = ~14).
    •    Based on that, here’s how many cups each bag size will brew:
    ◦    340 grams (12 ounces): 24 cups (340 ÷ 14 = ~24).
    ◦    454 grams (16 ounces, 1 pound): 32 cups (454 ÷ 14 = ~32).
    ◦    5 pounds (2,268 grams): 162 cups (2,268 ÷ 14 = ~162).

So, if you’re brewing one cup a day, a 340-gram bag will last about 3.5 weeks, a 454-gram bag will stretch to about a month, and a 5-pound bag will keep you covered for over five months.

For two cups a day, divide those timelines by half.

Espresso: The 18-Gram Dose

Espresso requires a bit more coffee per serving. For this example, we’re using an 18-gram dose per shot, which is a common size for modern espresso machines.
Here’s the math:
    •    340 grams (12 ounces): 18 shots (340 ÷ 18 = ~18).
    •    454 grams (16 ounces, 1 pound): 25 shots (454 ÷ 18 = ~25).
    •    5 pounds (2,268 grams): 126 shots (2,268 ÷ 18 = ~126).
For espresso lovers pulling one shot a day, a 340-gram bag will last just over two weeks, a 454-gram bag about three and a half weeks, and a 5-pound bag roughly four months. Pulling two shots a day? Cut those timelines in half.

What Does This Mean for Your Subscription?

Knowing how much coffee you go through helps you plan your subscription (or online ordering) better. Our most common subscriptions are 3x 454g bags every 6 weeks and 1x 5lb bag every 10 weeks.

Here’s a quick cheat sheet:
    •    Filter coffee drinkers: A 340-gram bag brews about 24 cups, while a 5-pound bag will stretch to 162 cups.
    •    Espresso lovers: A 340-gram bag pulls about 18 shots, and a 5-pound bag gives you 126 shots.
