ARTIST PROFILE
Rio Kaneki
Carved by hand in Victoria.
Meet the artist
Rio Kaneki is a printmaker and designer. Born in Japan, he made Victoria home, and today his work is commissioned from here all the way back to Tokyo. He works mostly in lino, carving every line by hand, and most days still start the same way: a pot of drip coffee, then the chisel.
Rio is the hand behind much of the artwork that carries the Fernwood name. Below are the designs he's made for us and the pieces you can wear. For the full conversation, read his profile in our journal.

Designs for Fernwood
Rio carved our Pharaoh's Horses by hand in lino, and it's still one of his favourite pieces. Since then, he's painted the mural on our building and shaped much of the artwork you'll find across our merch.
Every piece starts as a drawing, then becomes hours of carving. "There's very little room for mistakes," Rio says, "so I have to be completely present." By the time a block is finished, it's become something personal to him, even when it was made for us.
