About Us
Our Mission
Long time Fernwood residents Ben Cram, Terra Ogawa and Rob Kettner founded Fernwood Coffee Company with the goal of creating a successful and sustainable business while combining their love of all things culinary with a true passion for coffee.
Our Story
We started out as a small café, roasting coffee for in house brewing on a 1936 Barth coffee roaster. When the odd regular began to take beans home in brown bags the feedback we started getting, (good or constructive,) was exciting and inspiring. The more care and research we devoted to the coffee roasting the less we heard “constructive” feedback. A true love affair with coffee had begun. As more people started coming to the café and asking, “is this the new coffee company in Fernwood?” we realized that our passion was paying off.
At that point we received Organic and FairTrade certification and Fernwood Coffee Company was founded. Initially our café would be transformed into our roastery every night after hours. We are proud to say that we now boast a new full production roastery with a state of the art drum roaster, as well as the oldest functioning coffee roaster on Vancouver Island and have won a strong local following.
The Fernwood Coffee Difference
Why Fernwood?
Fernwood is a forward thinking community which boasts several public green spaces, a compost education center, a thriving theatre and music scene, and a public square that has been a vibrant meeting place for residents of the historic neighborhood for years. It is the type of community that comes together to drink coffee, celebrate, break bread, lend each other a helping hand or offer one another support in times of need. This sense of community is the inspiration behind Fernwood Coffee Company.
